What Can BIRT Do For You?

What is BIRT?
BIRT stands for Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools, and is commonly referred to as Workday® Report Designer. Report Designer is a powerful and often underutilized feature of Workday that enables you to design and use business form layouts that meet the exact report layout specifications required by your organization. These specifications can include rich text formatting, headers and footers, logos, page breaks, exact placement of labels, data, spaces, margins, and more! Let’s take a look at some of the applications of BIRT and how they can make your life easier.

Business Intelligence Reports
One common application of BIRT in Workday is using Report Designer to automate the tedious process of preparing and analyzing data to generate actionable insights for your organization. In order to generate business intelligence reports manually an employee must source data from often disparate sources, then blend and restructure the data in a centralized business intelligence platform, and finally query, visualize, and organize the relevant data into a single report. When performed on a regular basis, this process can take up significant time and resources that could be better utilized elsewhere.

Report Designer, on the other hand, allows you to automatically query, filter, and view data  directly in Workday, generating Just In Time (JIT) insights in customized reports that fit your organization’s specific needs. Considering the large library of  third party software that can be integrated with Workday and the fact that every aspect of BIRT reports are customizable, the possibilities are limitless! Let’s explore some of the commonly overlooked capabilities of BIRT.

Business Process Automation
Since any data that can be used in Workday Report Writer can be integrated into BIRT, practically any process that has outputs in Workday can be customized and automated. For example, many of the complicated and tedious processes associated with employee onboarding and termination such as the writing of benefits enrollment summaries and severance check printing can be set up to run automatically based on actions taken in Workday. But that’s not all! To demonstrate the power of BIRT, here is a small list of some commonly used functionalities that can be customized:

  • Offer letters

  • Time Slips

  • Employer statements

  • On-demand check printing

  • In-house check printing

  • Packing slips

  • Pay slips

  • Requests for Quotes

  • Purchase Orders

  • Customer and Supplier Contracts

  • Merit Statements

  • Compensation statements

  • Total compensation statements

  • Performance review summaries

  • Customer Invoices

  • OSHA work-related injury forms

  • Wage Theft statements
